Stephen McCarthy, Director of Bands

 

 

Stephen McCarthy is a native of Waycross, Georgia. Mr. McCarthy oversees all aspects of the Creekview Band Program including The Marching Grizzlies, three concert bands, percussion ensemble. and winter guards. Mr. McCarthy graduated from Ware County High School in 1989 and attended Valdosta State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 1993. While at Valdosta State, he was the drum major of the VSU Blazin’ Brigade Marching Band and performed in numerous performing ensembles. Mr. McCarthy received a Master's Degree in Music with an emphasis in instrumental conducting from Reinhardt University, having studied with Dr. David Gregory and Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.

 

Mr. McCarthy’s professional experience began in 1993 and includes five years as the associate director of bands at Morrow High School in Morrow, Georgia, nine years as director of bands at Stockbridge High School, in Stockbridge, Georgia, two years as director of bands at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, Georgia, three years as director of bands for the Social Circle City Schools in Social Circle, Georgia, and since 2012, serves as the director of bands at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia. Concert bands under Mr. McCarthy’s direction have performed at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference on three occasions (1995, 2001, 2004), the Grand National Adjudicator’s Invitational on three occasions (2003, 2006, 2013), the University of Georgia January Band Festival on two occasions (2002, 2015), the University of South Carolina Band Clinic (2002), the National Band Association Southern Division Conference (2004), the Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic (2005), and the Reinhardt University Honor Band Clinic (2014). Mr. McCarthy’s marching bands have been awarded numerous superior ratings, class placement awards, and ten grand champion marching awards. Parade performances include the National Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, FL, (2001) and the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC. (2019)

 
Mr. McCarthy has served the Georgia Music Educators Association in numerous capacities that include District 6 Instrumental Chair and GMEA Marching Band Chair. He has served as an adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the southeastern United States. Mr. McCarthy has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence on five occasions and was listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers on four occasions. Professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity.

 

Mr. McCarthy is married to Jennifer Hammond McCarthy, elementary music specialist. They have three children, Joy, Jack, and Jane.
