Stephen McCarthy is a native of Waycross, Georgia, where he graduated from Ware County High School in 1989. He attended Valdosta State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 1993. While at Valdosta State, he was the drum major of the VSU Blazin’ Brigade Marching Band and performed in numerous performing ensembles. In 2013, Mr. McCarthy received a Master's Degree in Music with an emphasis in instrumental conducting from Reinhardt University, having studied with Dr. David Gregory and Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.


Mr. McCarthy’s professional experience began in 1993 and includes five years as the associate director of bands at Morrow High School in Morrow, Georgia, nine years as director of bands at Stockbridge High School, in Stockbridge, Georgia, two years as director of bands at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, Georgia, three years as director of bands for the Social Circle City Schools in Social Circle, Georgia, and is currently in his seventh year as director of bands at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia. While at Morrow High School, Mr. McCarthy’s bands earned consistent superior ratings and he had the opportunity to conduct the Morrow Symphonic Band at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference (1995). The Stockbridge High School Band under Mr. McCarthy’s direction received superior ratings at all evaluated performances, which included eight grand champion marching awards, and an appearance in the National Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, Florida (2001). Also under Mr. McCarthy’s direction, invitational performances for the Stockbridge Wind Symphony included the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference on two occasions (2001, 2004), the University of Georgia January Band Festival (2002), the University of South Carolina Conductors Symposium (2002), the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational on two occasions (2003, 2006), the National Band Association Southern Division Conference (2004), and the Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic (2005). Mr. McCarthy was responsible for starting the band program at Strong Rock Christian School and in two years, the band had grown to nearly one hundred students. The band program in Social Circle tripled in size under Mr. McCarthy’s leadership. During his tenure, the Social Circle Marching Redskins were outfitted in custom designed uniforms for the first time in over twenty years. In the spring of 2012, the Social Circle Symphonic Band attended the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation for the first time in nearly a decade and earned all superior ratings. Under Mr. McCarthy's direction, the Creekview Marching Grizzlies have won two grand champion marching awards, which are the first in program history. The Marching Grizzlies have been invited to perform in the 2019 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC.  Invitational performances for the Creekview Wind Ensemble include the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational (2013), the Reinhardt University Honor Band Clinic (2014), and the University of Georgia January Band Festival (2015).

Mr. McCarthy has served the Georgia Music Educators Association in numerous capacities which include District 6 Instrumental Chair and GMEA Marching Band Chair. He has served as an adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the southeastern United States. Mr. McCarthy has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence on five occasions, and was listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers on four occasions. Professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. Mr. McCarthy is married to Jennifer Hammond McCarthy, elementary music specialist. They have two children, Joy, 14 years old, and Jack, 10 years old.
